'Treat game'

Mary Prior KC, handling the case, outlined the criminal behavior to the court.

She stated his victims were children from difficult backgrounds who were staying at a summer program which he operated.

The defendant conducted a "treat game" with the youngsters, the legal counsel explained, in which he would enter the sleeping quarters when they were settling down and tell them to eat sweets "as fast as possible".

She informed the proceedings the man had conducted this practice with the young males "repeatedly", and minors had previously fallen ill the following morning.

She stated the defendant had been successful in rationalizing this repeatedly as the minors being "overexcited from fun", until his stepson had concerns in July 2025.

Mrs Prior KC added: "This year his family member had suspicions about the activities, justifiably.

"They chose" to investigate in the defendant's belongings."

Mrs Prior KC said materials including lubricant, ointment and medical needles were discovered, and his stepchild alerted the authorities about his concerns.

She stated the man proceeded to conduct the "sweet game" with six youngsters that evening - Saturday 26 July - and they were everyone unwell the following morning.

"Authorities" had not responded by that time," she continued.

The oversight body, the investigative body, had stated that it was reviewing law enforcement's management of the incident.

The legal representative said the children were struggling to walk due to their condition, so the family member notified the law enforcement once more.

She said the defendant then conducted the "sweet game" in a space of five minors.
